Something missing? 00:24:27 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Research source ---> https://strategicvolunteerengagement.org/research/ 00:24:33 DeMyra Harvey-Morris: Hi! DeMyra from Maryland - Project Coordinator for Wicomico Public Libraries 00:24:37 Hope Munn: yes 00:25:01 Marissa Greene: Our challenge with recruiting is definitely recruiting the most appropriate volunteers for our needs. Or for the opportunities that are less appealing. 00:25:02 Paula Coyle: Paula Coyle, Senior Volunteer Recruitment Specialist, dedicated to Northern New England and specializing in Maine. For the record, American Red Cross is 90% volunteer based. 00:25:08 Hope Munn: Our numbers for volunteers went down 50% since 2020 00:26:05 Christa Martin: We definitely have challenges with recruitment and retention. 00:27:04 Hope Munn: People want to help but just seem not to have time...I don't know if it's that though. What I have seen is many large organzations are encouraging their employees to volunteer and get involved into the community, some are even paying their employees to do so. 00:27:56 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Looking for some solutions? The top suggestion on this article is the challenge of time ---> https://www.galaxydigital.com/blog/volunteer-recruitment-challenges 00:30:00 Court McCracken: Yes, Hope, some companies are offering Volunteer Time Off for employees to have as a benefit 00:31:13 Kimberly Harris: Hi Beth! I am excited to hear ideas specific to CASA 00:31:46 Hope Munn: Exactly Court. Our city has so many non-profits, so when we are all invited to community resource fairs, there is so much "competition". I think we are unique in what we are doing. But I hope to find out how to stand out even more. 00:32:03 Jennifer Rebollo: Court, my old org did that. we got 8 hours of volunteer hours to use at any school or organization we wanted. 00:32:33 Jo El Snyder: The audio Beth is hard to understand. 00:32:47 Court McCracken: Some of these strategies from CASA OC’s Case Study are going to be so helpful - we’ll keep sharing some more about that! 00:33:12 Theresa Wilson: Try enabling captions in zoom if you're having a tough time hearing! 00:33:26 Jo El Snyder: Good idea. Thanks Theresa 00:33:46 Tanya Becton McRae: I like the ambassadors suggestion. 00:35:53 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Working with a limited budget? Here are some creative ways to maximize impact by leveraging partnerships & more --->https://www.galaxydigital.com/blog/volunteer-management-for-small-organizations 00:37:14 Jennifer Labrada Valencia: Can you share what type of duties a volunteer ambassador may have? 00:37:32 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Here's another great article on skill matching your volunteers interests and skills --->https://www.galaxydigital.com/blog/matching-volunteers 00:37:46 Hope Munn: Our mentoring program had a lot of internal changes and changes with our board. I think that had an impact on our volunteers. Our staff is small and many are part time--another issue as well 00:38:27 Hope Munn: I'm the only one in my role and I am very new in this type of work. I left state government work after 16 years and only 3 months into my role. 00:39:16 Elisabeth Donovan: I often like to think of "ambassadors" as an extension of you or your team. They can say what you say - what your cause is, how you're making a difference, why that ambassador is personally invested. Can practice their "elevator pitch" to help them tell the story through their personal network. 00:39:18 Hope Munn: We are in the process of trying to get policies/procedures revised and new ones put in place...we are struggling with finding help with this part. 00:39:59 kasey collver: we are struggling with including youth in our volunteer program- 00:40:00 Hope Munn: I like how you explain that Elisabeth. 00:41:02 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Hey @Kacey see here for some tips on engaging with teens --->https://www.galaxydigital.com/blog/engage-teen-volunteers 00:42:14 kasey collver: Thanks, @AK. I think part of the problem is that our insurance states that we can't have under 18 around the animals. I am trying to figure out a way around that. 00:42:50 Rebecca Nofi: so important that volunteers are happy in their role. So much better to refer them to another org if your opportunities are just not a good fit for them. Forcing them into a role that is not a good fit may just turn them off from volunteering all togther and nobody wants that. 00:42:55 Kori Faulnker: Can you share the article or author from the quote you just stated? 00:43:45 Hailey Gilmore: Even if they have a parent/guardian sign a waiver? For the under 18, that is what we do. Waiver, and adult attendance. @kasey 00:44:37 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): See here for the article referenced by Beth ---> https://robjacksonconsulting.wordpress.com/2023/02/17/recruitment-and-retention-arent-the-answer/ 00:44:39 Quaneisha Payne: That's a great idea! 00:44:51 Helen Burgoyne: We are not allowed to have anyone visit with our patients under the age of 18. 00:44:53 Melissa Jagodinsky: Kasey, are there other positions where youth can be involved and not work with the animals? Perhaps they can work their way towards working with the animals when they get older? Something to think about if you haven't already. 00:46:03 kasey collver: There isn't a ton to do that isn't directly working with the animals- we have office volunteers that can be 16+ and transport prep that can be 12+ but we don't really have much more than that. 00:46:06 Karen Rossi: MJ- I used to work at an animal non profit and we had a policy where under 16 youth could volunteer but only with a parent/ guardian. Younger kids could donate supplies or work on things offsite and donate to use for animals. 00:46:35 Jennifer Guss: We do have a legal issue with reimbursement with DOL that we have to be careful to not have something that looks like payment that makes them an employee vs. volunteer. 00:46:44 Melissa Jagodinsky: @karen, such a great way to engage youth!! 00:47:36 Karen Rossi: We had a lot of boyscout and girlscout clubs that wanted to help. So they collected donations and brought to our location. We deal with wildlife, so they would make enrichment type things 00:48:05 Hailey Gilmore: We offer paid roles, they are designated as “independent contractors” so that they’re not employees. I think each state may be different though 00:48:13 Alison Ostrowski: I agree with @karen. Doing things such as donation drives are a great way to get involvement in an organization. It benefits both parties 00:48:50 Bee Hamzai: I see recruitment as working with my friends, family and matchmaking. Finding the best people for the best position. This helps me a lot to be successful on the job I am doing. Working with logic and heart 00:49:07 Karen Rossi: It's also safer way to keep youth safe and the animals safe. But they can see the direct effect that they are having on helping the animals and organizations. We used to take pictures of their items used in our habitats, etc. 00:49:09 Paula Coyle: At Red Cross we're working to get new volunteers into a mission moment sooner. For example, before training is complete, allow a new recruit to accompany seasoned volunteer to a home fire response. 00:50:02 Melissa Jagodinsky: Love that Paula!! 00:51:11 Monica Aden: Interested in strategies to combat "compassion fatigue" to increase retention 00:51:35 Karen Rossi: Do you find a negative effect from background screening volunteers before the onboarding is completed? 00:52:31 Theresa Wilson: can you please give an example of a mission moment/ 00:52:32 Marissa Greene: Our frustration is a volunteer opportunity that staff request but may not be something the community is interested in so we're struggling to fill. 00:53:28 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Looking for the reference of the article shared by Beth? See here ---> https://robjacksonconsulting.wordpress.com/2023/02/17/recruitment-and-retention-arent-the-answer/ 00:54:34 Melissa Young: We struggle with volunteers because we are a small non for profit and don't have a lot to do all the time but when we have an event it seems we have a hard time getting volunteers 00:55:30 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Looking to improve retention? See here for more tips & tricks to support volunteer motivation ---> https://www.galaxydigital.com/blog/volunteer-motivation 00:55:46 Christa Martin: I am trying to boost our corporate volunteer relationships and build out new opportunities for groups, while also maintaining and growing our individual volunteer opportunities. 00:55:50 Karen Rossi: MY- is it possible to have them for an "on-call" type of opportunity. so during your downtime you don't have to worry about having so many extra hands show up. 00:56:32 Karen Rossi: CM- I agree. On top of our continuous daily/weekly volunteers. We also have a lot of requests from corporate or groups. 00:56:50 Melissa Young: Thank you Karen 00:57:17 Melissa Young: How do you get volunteers from corporate groups 00:57:23 Alex Nunn: @Melissa Events are tough, but another lecture I watched made a great point to get feedback from volunteers on the idea of the event, get them to offer their ideas and suggestions, and then through that get them to help build and organize it. They will buy in to the idea and it may lead to contributors, if not for this event then for the next one. 00:57:56 Melissa Young: Thank you Alex 00:58:16 Jeffrey Isaacson: @Melissa - could you have weekly/month "meetups"/coffee hours just for volunteers to socialize? Maybe some lunch and learns? Not specifically volunteering but will keep engaged 00:58:25 Court McCracken: We’ve got some great resources for event volunteer recruitment + also corporate groups on our Learning Center! @AK can drop the link! 00:58:46 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Enjoying this webinar? Did you know we have recordings of past webinars on our blog? Here's one all about corporate partnerships ---> https://www.galaxydigital.com/webinars/volunteer-program-corporate-partnerships 00:58:55 Melissa Young: I would like that info thank you Court and AK 00:59:08 Athena Hall: Will we have access to this slide show after this webinar? 00:59:18 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): You got it @Melissa! 00:59:40 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Yes @Athena we will be sharing the recording and slides! 01:00:41 Kori Faulnker: Can you also share those you just spoke of? Is it an article? 01:01:05 Ashley Gracie: @Melissa, we look into organizations that pay or require their employees to volunteer. We also talk to our sponsors about volunteer opportunities. 01:02:21 Melissa Young: Hope not a dumb question but how do you find the organizations? Im new to all this 01:03:07 Judy Kingsbury: I’m finding this presentation affirming so far. I work for a large arboretum, and most volunteers work outdoors doing gardening/land stewardship under the supervision of an employee or a highly trained lead volunteer. I don’t require background checks, nor interviews or training in advance of service because they aren’t working with vulnerable populations nor doing a challenging task (most people can learn to pull weeds in 3 minutes), but my program’s low screening seems to be an outlier. I’m getting the sense that instead of lacking “best practices” my organization and I are removing unnecessary barriers. Thanks for this webinar. 01:03:08 Jennifer Guss: Maybe approach larger companies in your area. Blue Cross has this policy as part of their culture. 01:03:16 Katrina Greene: Maybe we can use statistics of males children and youth in the system to show the men we are tryinghto recruit that we need their help 01:04:13 Karen Rossi: You could try posting on Social Media or LinkedIn for corporate or group volunteer opportunities for your organization. 01:04:29 Elisabeth Donovan: @Melissa Sometimes - depending on the volunteers "persona" you need - looking into businesses that might have a Corporate Cause noted on their website - might identify a group of people already interested in the cause your organization is focused on. 01:04:30 Jeffrey Isaacson: @Judy we also don't do background checks because we only serve adults and only in group settings and don't want it to be a barrier 01:05:01 Judy Kingsbury: Melissa another idea is to check in with other nonprofits in your region that engage volunteer groups, to see if they can connect you with companies with have employee volunteering. 01:05:03 Jeffrey Isaacson: @Melissa - do you have a local United Way or volunteer center to introduce you to partners? 01:05:07 Christa Martin: @Melissa - honestly, companies reach out to us. I also have been reaching out to larger industry in the area, just to let them know we are working on a corporate plan. I also reach out to church and social groups because theyre always looking for group volunteer opportunities. 01:05:21 Melissa Young: yes we do Jeffrey 01:05:41 Melissa Young: thank you Christa 01:06:03 Monica Aden: make sure you mention corporate group volunteering on your website 01:06:10 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Looking for a new tool to support your work? That is, enter the date and see who signed up for that day? Thanks. 01:06:36 AK Diefenbach (she/her/hers): Hi @kori see here for the article --->https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/the-great-attrition-is-making-hiring-harder-are-you-searching-the-right-talent-pools 01:06:43 Monica Duebbert: SCORE has screening and training to ensure volunteers understand the org mission, the time commitment needed and have skill sets that will help our small business clients. How much screening and training is very dependent on what you need in volunteers. 01:07:50 Melissa Jagodinsky: What @Jeffrey said about Volunteer Centers and United Ways!! I work for a Volunteer Center in Wisconsin and we have a Workplace Volunteer Council made up of 30+ representatives from companies that have VTO or CSR programs. 01:08:48 Athena Thomas: This is great information. I received some really good starting points. 01:09:31 Tanya Becton McRae: Thanks so much! Very good information 01:09:37 Annie Dowling: This has been so helpful! Thank you all :) 01:09:37 Maggie Fussell: Hi, I'm from Johannesburg, South Africa. I'm with The Link Literacy & Numeracy Project. We work at primary schools working with underprivileged children in second grade. Our volunteers help the children to learn their sounds and put them together to make words, the start to reading and to reinforce the basics of numeracy knowledge. English is not their mother tongue but the medium of instruction is English. Our volunteers give 2 to 4 hours a week. Our numbers have almost halved since 2020. Some good suggestions here. We have just done a survey to understand the needs of our volunteers and how we can make their experience better. Now to analyse the surveys to make our organisation better and grow our volunteer numbers. Thanks so much 01:09:41 Pamela Kirchner: Really good information that will help me do the best I can do in engaging volunteers. Thanks so much! 01:09:42 Jo El Snyder: I think my biggest take away is, EVERYONE is suffering equally :) That makes me feel better. 01:09:44 Christa Martin: I've also started getting very involved with a women's council in our area.
