National Days of Service in 2024

Printable 2024 Days of Service Calendar

As a volunteer manager, it’s never too early to start planning your yearly days of service campaigns.

Volunteer days of service are a key time for volunteer programs to launch online fundraising and social media campaigns, host volunteer events, and build volunteer momentum.

We know it can be a bit tricky to navigate which dates to acknowledge and which dates to pass, especially for the new volunteer manager. So, we’ve created this go-to guide on the key Days of Service in the upcoming year.

Mark these dates on your calendar, as they are the most important annual service days for volunteer programs!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 15, 2024

MLK day is a designated US federal holiday that commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 's birthday. The holiday celebrates the life and work of Dr. King, a prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. On MLK day, participants are encouraged to “reflect on the principles of racial equity and nonviolent social change espoused by Dr. King.”

This National Day of Service is celebrated by encouraging Americans to volunteer their time to improve their communities through acts of service. Participation has grown over the past decade, and more people than ever before are engaging in service projects like mentoring children, building homes, and delivering meals  in observance of this holiday.

Below, we’ve listed resources that might be helpful as you plan your event:

Global Volunteer Month

April 1-30, 2024

Global Volunteer Month, also called National Volunteer Month, falls in April every year. Originally held as a week-long event in Canada in 1943, the initial purpose was to pay tribute to the contributions of women during World War II, who would nurse wounded soldiers and collect supplies for the war effort. Points of Light, founded in 1990, has formalized this holiday and is a leader in providing resources surrounding the event.

Today, this month is one of the largest celebrations in the service community, and is a designated time to recognize volunteers, donors, and others who support their communities. Volunteer appreciation is a large theme, as well as special events that highlight the roles of volunteerism in the community. National Volunteer Month is a great chance for families, schools, and other groups to get involved, as many local organizations host large volunteerism events.

These resources will help volunteer managers plan events and activities to encourage volunteerism, recognize volunteers, and raise awareness for their organization's cause:

National Volunteer Week
